Geshem, Geshem MiShamayim!

Today, just as I got to the foot of the Schechter mountain, it started raining. Thankfully I had looked at the weather report this morning (walla.co.il, not weather.com which I have found grossly inacurate in Jerusalem) and because it said rain, I brought my rain jacket. I walked the last 20 minutes home in pouring rain. I know that I am supposed to be thankfull that it is raining in Israel but wouldn't it be better if it rained in the area around the Kinneret instead? It seems like that would be slightly smarter and practical.

I often get teased because if I am in an area that I do not know so well and I look at a map and then at the street, I assume that if the direction that I want to head is North, than I should walk up the hill (even if the street goes E/W). Case and point- the first time that I went to JTS, I took the subway to 125th street. I then exited down the steps and figured that if JTS was South (122), I should walk downhill. In short, I did not see a street sign until 128th and I got to know Harlem before getting to know JTS.

Knowing this issue I have, I still think that it should only rain North of the Kinneret so that the rain will flow down into it and fill it again. (Likewise, the Nile should be in the Southern Hemisphere because it flows North=downhill.)

  1. JTS officially recommends you take the subway to the 116th Street stop. That way, if you get lost, at least you're getting lost near the more impressive looking Columbia.
