Dubi (aka Doobie)

Israelis have names that sound weird to native English speakers. Nimrod, Osnat, Moran, Nadav (one in the bible was good and the other-not so much). Then there are the nicknames: For David- Dubi or Dudu. And there is also the cute ones. I met a future Rabbi whose name is Shulamit but she goes by Shul. (Kind of like my friend Abbi who will also soon be a rabbi and just has to add an R to her name to be Rabbi Abbi.)

Then there are the English names that must be the worst for Israelis to pronounce, especially when transliterated into Hebrew. Jean is called John, Jin, Jen, Gin, Joan, Jill- never Jean. Gail gets Jill, Gal, Goal, Gill. Annie gets Anninie.

Maybe dialogue should start there.

I am Aviva. Pretty hard to butcher. Sounds much better in Hebrew than if you were to tanslate it into English. Spring Judith Kremer just does not have the same ring to it. Aviva spelled unmistakenly in both Hebrew and English.

Aviva- I love it! Thanks Emah and Abba (glad you won Emah)!
