Yad Vashem (aka Contact Letils)

Yesterday, I took advantage of a trip offered by the Conservative Yeshiva and I spent the afternoon on a three-hour guided tour of the Holocaust museum, Vad Vashem.

Let me begin by saying that I was very glad that I went. I had last been inside the museum in 1998, before it had been completely redone and i had last been to the museum in 2003 when I was fortunate to have been able to attend the national ceremony commemorating Yom Hashoah (also before it had been redone).

I am also glad that I went through with a guide although I am now eager to go again without one so that I have the time to sit and watch the videos, read the captions and descriptions on the displays and process everything that I am seeing, hearing and experiencing.

English was the 5th language of the guide who led us through the museum...and it was clear hearing him speak. There were many times where I missed what he said because I was busy translating his previous comment into Hebrew to see if it made more sense that way. "Every something is a something"- mashehu mashehu, and "contact lentils"- contact lenses. This second one was my favorite becasue the word for lentils in Hebrew is Adashim and contact lenses is Adashot. Combine the two and you have contact lentils. Also, apparently across Europe, (and the guide was origionally from Romania), contacts are called contact lentils...
