This morning, on my way to school, I passed what looked to be a father and son waiting for the bus. This must have been a special bus stop for a gan (preschool). That was not what was impressive. What got me was that the father and son were ultra orthodox. The father had a big black Kaputtah (robe) and kippah over his long peot (sidelocks) and bushy black beard. He had a cigarette in his hand and was looking down the road. His son, about 4 years old is wearing a green polo shirt, khaki shorts and a big velvet Aleh-Bet kippah, tzitzit sticking out and waving in the wind and has a small backpack on.
So far, not so out of the ordinary- just wait...
The son is holding a newspaper that is as big as he is and is turning the pages as if he is reading it. As he finishes a page, he folds the entire paper against his body to be able to reach to turn the page. I was laughing as I passed.
Yonina made a good point- at least the 4 year old was not holding the cigarette.
...give it a few years...
