LAST FULL DAY TRAVELING!!!!
When we got to the plane, (remembering the not-sleeping meal situation from the way to Thailand) I asked one of the flight attendants, Kokeb, to do us a favor. I told her, I know we are the ones on the plane with the kosher meals but we wanted to be able to sleep, not eat. Please, please, please would she do us the kindness of not waking us up. Not for letting us know that they were putting our food in the oven, not to give us trays, not to serve drinks, etc and we would let them know when and if we wanted to eat. She thought that we were so funny and then let us sleep. I slept for about 4-4.5 hours and then ate breakfast. She gave us the dinners we had missed "to-go."
We landed in Addis after 7am. Our luggage was checked all the way to Tel Aviv so we grabbed our backpacks and seeing as we knew what to do, headed to get our transit visas. Getting the visas this time went much more smoothly than the previous time since the lady at the desk recognized us from 2 weeks before and we knew what we were doing. She issued us our boarding passes for the final leg of the trip and did not charge us again for the visas! Then we sat for 2 hours before heading to customs. I took a picture of one of the exits while sitting. Apparently, in case of emergency, you are to jump on your head and exit up and out of the door. OOOPs!
We left the airport and headed straight for the movie theater where we bought tickets for Valentine's Day and Agora. Then we sat and ate our airplane food since we had 3 hours till the first movie. While sitting, we had some fun people watching. We noticed that it is expected that you will pay a lady some coins when you get back to your car for having "watched" it and that scafolding in Ethiopia is not the same as that in NY or Israel.
So now it's 6:40 pm and we are back at Happy Pizza after seeing the two movies. Both were horrible although all of the romance and kissing in the first really made me glad that it was less than 12 hours till I was seeing Ari. The loads of predictable drama I could have done without. The second movie was even worse with many anti-Semitic statements and language that made us cringe, especially when a line about getting rid the Jews in the town got a laugh. I almost throught about asking Yo if she wanted to walk out but I also wanted to see if there would be anything redeeming about the movie.
We were so upset when it ended. It got us talking about narrative and accurate historical portrayal and also about movies that make you think and how to teach them. I still would not recommend this movie! At all!
Then we got our pizza to-go and I carried it back to the airport where I pointed out to Yo that this was the second time in 24 hours that we were putting a pizza through the security x-ray machine. I ended up getting the full pat-down with bra adjustment twice at the airport!
Also at the airport, I tried to use 30 minutes of internet time. I paid and was in the middle of one (my first) e-mail when the computer died. I told them and they switched me to a different computer where I spent 20 minutes trying to get into my g-mail. Then found the draft of the e-mail and kept writing when the computer timed-out. I was pissed! There was no warning and because I had to switch, there was no working counter for the remaining time. I did not manage to send a single e-mail in 30 mintues. At least we are going home!
I am super excited. (even though I know that I have 2 papers left to write from the fall semester...)
