As of today, just over a week before Passover, Israeli schools are closed. This is the spring break- nearly a month off with Passover taking up a chunk of it.
As I heard mentioned this weekend; while we are celebrating the holiday where we went from slavery to freedom, parents are sent from freedom to slavery. Apparently, trying to solve this lack of child-care issue takes many forms. There are Israeli mini-camps (Kaytanot) where you can pay an exorbitent amount of money for your child to attend what is essence is a week-long day camp program, or you can take them with you to work in what I would be tempted to call an "internship".
This morning, on my way into the Jerusalem Central Bus Station, I was passing through security and I noticed that behind the x-ray machine for the bags, was sitting a guy, in his mid-thirties, with a 5 or 6 year old on his lap. As bags would pass through the machine, he would point to the screen and whisper to the girl who would then point to a different bag and whisper back. Also, in the school cafeteria, the son of one of the owners came and was helping with putting the sandwiches in the toaster, passing out napkins and spoons, and refilling the drink machine.
I hope that the parents also get a chance to rest...eventually.
